For those who love the mountains Valtellina is an essential destination both in the summer – to admire the colours and variety of the landscape among valleys, peaks and meadows – and in the winter when you can enjoy winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, as well as snowshoeing and mountaineering.
Here in the Stelvio National Park there are numerous hiking itineraries for families, inexperienced hikers and experts alike. Mountain huts and refuges offer a place to rest during your walk or a place to stay if your excursion lasts a few days.
Itineraries for all
- From the Campovico church take the track that heads towards Cermeledo. From here you can see Morbegno and arrive in the Dazio Valley. The entire excursion takes one and a half hours and the height difference is just 300m.
- If you would like to experience an alpeggio (a mountain hut on a pasture), then follow the path from Rifugio Bar Bianco that leads, through alpine pastures, to the Baita del Prato. You can get to the Alpeggio di Culino along a nature trail.
- From Bormio, not far from the old town centre, you can follow the Pedemontana trail. An easy route that anyone can enjoy, that starts with a slight climb at the beginning, levelling out as it goes on becoming more or less flat. You can enjoy views over the valley of Bormio from the path.
Slightly challenging itineraries
In just over 4 hours starting from Gerola you arrive at Pizzo dei Tre Signori, at 2,554 m a.s.l. Along the route, which passes through the Valle della Pietra, you can visit the Apeggi di Trona Soliva and Rifugio Falc.
Challenging itineraries
- In the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi you can do a 4-day hike along over 100km through valleys, woodland, past lakes and mountain peaks. It is known as the Gran Via delle Orobie.
- If on the other hand you are an expert mountaineer with a good level of physical fitness, the Sentiero Roma is for you: a challenging excursion requiring technical equipment (harness and ropes to secure yourself to the fixed ropes along more exposed tracts). This route is over 50km long, and takes 5 days to complete, in Val Masino in the western Rhaetian Alps. These are just some of the possible mountain excursions that Valtellina offers. It would take dozens of pages to describe all of them. Wherever you decide to stay in Valtellina you will find routes that suit your requirements and level of fitness.
